Diary entry for Friday 25 October 2024
Tidying my office this afternoon made me realise that it is as cluttered as my mind. There’s stuff everywhere, and as I have the room to myself, there is no-one else to blame! Random piles of work-related matter fill every possible bit of floor space, the desk and table are each covered in paperwork and equipment, and there is almost no room to manoeuvre.
The important parts are incredibly well organised, with every single item listed in an inventory, but everything else sits in a chaotic mess around this solid core. Again, this is similar to how my mind is structured.
I was finally forced to tidy my workspace because next week I will have some volunteers assisting me. As well as the health and safety aspect, the thought of a group of people forming a first impression of me based on this disgraceful room was horrifying.
It made me think of what someone would think if they picked up my phone and it was unlocked. They would see that I have approximately 645 open browser tabs and dozens of long, rambling notes saved as drafts. To be fair, they would get an accurate picture of how my brain operates!
I have moments in which information floods my mind and I feel as though I must explore and document this, only to go off on a tangent or start afresh with a new subject just minutes later. The thoughts that swirl through my mind can seem like the most important thing in the world one moment, then forgettable the next.
At the end of today’s tidy up, I had barely scratched the surface. It’s still an absolute mess, but it doesn’t look quite as bad as it did at the start of the day. There’s still a lot of decluttering required — in the office and in my mind.
